Welcome to the Durham FM Association
|
The Durham FM Association is a group of friendly amateur radio operators interested in all aspects of amateur radio service. Members in Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and surrounding areas of North Carolina enjoy operating through VHF and UHF repeaters sponsored and maintained by the club.
Currently the club operates FM voice repeaters on 145.450-, 147.225+, 224.260-, 444.100+ and 444.450+ mhz (the plus and minus indicating standard offsets on the respective bands).
We meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month (see Calendar) with Dinner (optional) at 6:00pm and the business meeting and program at 7:00pm. We are meeting at Bullock's BBQ, on 3330 Quebec Drive in Durham. [click for map] (For more info on each meeting, check the Calendar entry.)
Our club runs a great hamfest toward the end of May each year. The DurHamFest was held in the Little River Community Complex the last four years. Dealers sell new and used equipment, books, and parts. "Tailgaters" also offer much used equipment. Besides the buying, selling, and trading, door prizes and fellowship with old and new friends make this a real fun event.

Joe Allison, K4JRA will be talking about the NC Voice Interoperability Plan for Emergency Responders (VIPER) trunking system. He will introduce us to this statewide system with an overview of the scope and the basic technology. He will then add some technical details that should be of particular interest to hams. He has promised to leave plenty of time for our questions
Joe lives in Franklinton and has some serious HF facilities including a Yaesu FT-1000MP, a Mackay Amp, and multiple antennas spread over a 40ft tower and a 100 ft tower. He enjoys contesting and DXing.
Joe works for the N.C State Highway Patrol as the Eastern VIPER Supervisor. As such he is responsible for maintaining an 800MHz trunk system and 6GHz microwave network. Joe is also the Tower Rescue Instructor for the N.C Highway Patrol.

It's been a while since we dedicated a full meeting to show and tell. It's always very popular and interesting. We'll do it again on January 3rd.
Bring something of interest to hams and be prepared to spend about 5 minutes talking about it. Maybe you got an interesting Christmas present. That's fair game.
Projects, techniques, experiences with equipment, reports of successes, reports of instructive failures, kits, home-brews, all sound good.
Use your imagination and share! |

Wow, What a Party!
The December DFMA meeting was attended by 59 people. That must be a record for this century! This included 21 couples making it more of a family-style rather than the normal technical event. We were all there to celebrate the holidays and the 40th anniversary of the founding of the DFMA. As usual, the meeting was held at Bullock’s BBQ and everyone could choose from their extensive menu, but the Club picked up the tab.
Three of the 13 founding members of the DFMA were present. Charlie Durst, NC4CD, the DFMA’s first president was there with his wife, Lee, WA4HYL, Charlie brought the Lids from the Hill. The "Lid" has, by tradition, recorded awards for either outstanding service, or for doing something dumb, Charlie related some of the more humorous Lid awards made in the earlier years of the Club.
Sid Edwards, W4QWM, accompanied by his wife, Sandy, made a few comments. Sid was the Club’s first secretary and holder of other Club’s offices at one time or other, Most recently Sid was our newsletter editor for many years.
Herman Cone, N4CH, with wife Donna, N4RXL, was the third founding member present for the festivities. The Cones made a special trip from Goode, Virginia, to join us for this occasion. Herman also shared anecdotes illuminating the history of the DFMA. He brought some of the early equipment used in the seventies. His "show and tell" included a "huge" HT and several models of the Heathkit "Twoers". These were small, relatively inexpensive, crystal-controlled, 2m AM transceivers capable of about 5W. He showed a basic model and one with an enhanced receiver add-on. Finally he presented Charlie with a seriously modified model that Charlie had once owned.
Dee, KU4GC, made some additional comments based on his browsing of historic DFMA newsletters lent to him by Charlie. He noted that the first repeater was a 440 repeater and that autopatch was a high priority but took some time to implement. He also noted that typical DFMA treasury balances in the first few years were around $200. He then called on the current treasurer, MK, W4MKR, for a report: checking and CD -- about $10 thousand each (before paying for the dinner :-) This is quite a change! (Of course there has been inflation.) Another interesting comparison to the early days is dues. The first dues were $10 per year and by 1973 they were $12 per year. Our dues are still $12/year! Other early fund raising included having a DFMA Club Table at various hamfests with 10% going to the club. This naturally led to our own DurHamFest in October, 1973. Finally, Dee shared a “DFMA Newsletter” dating from 1984. It was on the back of a postcard and read:
DFMA NEWSLETTER (SHORT FORM)
MEETING: NOVEMBER 13TH 1984 - TUESDAY
THE GOLDEN CORRAL 6:00PM
"COME OR WE BREAK YOUR LEGS."
Certainly one way to get out the word!
This year’s DFMA holiday party also engaged in its more traditional holiday activities. Thirty-seven Christmas gifts for children were collected (and were delivered to Durham Social Services for distribution). $407.50 for the Durham Rescue mission was collected at the dinner "passing the hat" as well as $20 for the Food Bank of North Carolina. Supplemented by the traditional $350 check from the DFMA treasury, this yielded $777.50 for charity.
And a good time was had by all...

Continuing a tradition of having the DFMA pick up the tab for our December Holiday Dinner Meeting, we will meet at Bullock's Barbecue Restaurant in Durham starting at 6:00pm. You will be able to order from the menu. This holiday dinner is the program. Bring your spouse or friend!
This is our Holiday Meeting! In that tradition you may (optionally):
Bring a Christmas gift for a child to be distributed to Durham's needy. If wrapped, mark gender and age range on the outside. If not wrapped, that's fine too. If you have one -- a gift bag would work too.
The Club will make its annual gift to the Durham Rescue Mission. We will be passing the "hat" for a personal contributions. Note: in past years some people have dropped a check in the hat. We can forward it and the cancelled check can be handy at tax time.
Also, if you are not in a position to donate anything this year, please come anyway. Or if you are making a special effort through your church or at the office, don’t feel pressured to do more than you really should. Your presence at this meeting is a gift to all of us.
Program There will be no program as such. However, this is also the DFMA’s 40th year and you may also think of this meeting as a celebration of the DFMA’s 40th Birthday. Along those lines, be ready to share an anecdote from the DFMA’s past. Help the new members appreciate our rich tradition.
