Welcome to the Durham FM Association
The Durham FM Association is a group of friendly amateur radio operators interested in all aspects of amateur radio service. Members in Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and surrounding areas of North Carolina enjoy operating through VHF and UHF repeaters sponsored and maintained by the club. Currently the club operates FM voice repeaters on 145.450-, 147.225+, 224.260-, 444.100+ and 444.450+ mhz(the plus and minus indicating standard offsets on the respective bands). We meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month (see Calendar) with Dinner (optional) at 6:00pm and the business meeting and program at 7:00pm. We are meeting at Bullock's BBQ, on 3330 Quebec Drive in Durham. [click for map] (For more info on each meeting, check the Calendar entry.) Our club runs a great hamfest toward the end of May each year. The DurHamFest was held in the Little River Community Complex the last three year and is expected to be there again in 2011. Dealers sell new and used equipment, books, and parts. "Tailgaters" also offer much used equipment. Besides the buying, selling, and trading, door prizes and fellowship with old and new friends make this a real fun event.

Jeff Forbes will talk about his experience in Teaching with Robots.
The goal of the Duke/Durham Public Schools Robotics program is to foster interest
and competence in science, mathematics, and computers, while developing
problem-solving skills, enabling creative thinking and design, and providing a
domain for application of scientific concepts. Middle and high school students
learn and apply the scientific, mathematical, and technological fundamentals behind
the construction of robots and the design of control algorithms in weekly after
school meetings with undergraduate student mentors. This talk describes the program and includes live demos of robotics projects.
Jeff Forbes is on the faculty of the Duke Computer Science Department.

Program at Bullock's BBQ: Bill Cole, KG4CXY, will speak about
North Carolina Helping Hams & 10 years of Public Service Bill will relate some of his experiences founding and working with North Carolina Helping Hams. He will cover important issues such as personal liability coverage. We will also leave time for general Q&A.

With heavy heart, I must report that John Forrest passed away early this morning [9/9/09]. He had fought a long battle with the rare disease Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.
He leaves behind a daughter, and a son.
While active for only a couple of years in amateur radio, he made a lot of friends as he did anywhere he went, or in anything he participated. John and I were close friends for almost 30 years. He left behind a lot of great memories. From Dee Ramm, KU4GC: John became a ham after retiring from the insurance business and after serious illness. I had gotten to know him when we moved to Hillsborough about 20 years ago and kept him informed about any ham radio classes that we were offering or planning to offer. He never found the time until he retired. When he got his license, he promptly joined both OCRA and the DFMA. He only made it to a couple of DFMA meetings, but I appreciated his support. I will miss him.
From the Raleigh New and Observer: A Celebration of Life and visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2009 at The Big Barn Convention Center in Hillsborough.
