Welcome to the Durham FM Association

The Durham FM Association is a group of friendly amateur radio operators interested in all aspects of amateur radio service. Members in Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and surrounding areas of North Carolina enjoy operating through VHF and UHF repeaters sponsored and maintained by the club.

Currently the club operates FM voice repeaters on 145.450-, 147.225+, 224.260-, 444.100+ and 444.450+ mhz (the plus and minus indicating standard offsets on the respective bands).

We meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month (see Calendar) with Dinner (optional) at 6:00pm and the business meeting and program at 7:00pm.  We are meeting at Bullock's BBQ, on 3330 Quebec Drive in Durham. [click for map] (For more info on each meeting, check the Calendar entry.)

Our club runs a great hamfest toward the end of May each year. The DurHamFest was held in the Little River Community Complex the last four years.  Dealers sell new and used equipment, books, and parts. "Tailgaters" also offer much used equipment. Besides the buying, selling, and trading, door prizes and fellowship with old and new friends make this a real fun event.

Part  of the evening will be devoted to DurHamFest organization.   This will be your best chance to find out about and volunteer in various ways to make your DurHamFest 2012 a great success.

We should have some time left for Show & Tell.  This is always popular, so bring something and be ready to spend 5 minutes or so talking about it.

On Sunday, 4/15, the DFMA's MCU provided an interesting example of a "truck" for lots of visitors.  While we will have a longer story on this in the next Link, below are a few of the pictures provided by Lowell, KK4PH.  Kudos to Bruce, N1LN, and Derek, W4DTB, who helped organize the participation in the event and the running of the special event station N4T.  Also to Wilson, W4BOH, who drove the MCU there bright and early for setup and who took it back "home" after all was done, and to all of the hams who came to participate and provide their support.

April 3 Program: The Cuban Numbers Stations Print E-mail
Written by W4BOH
Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:49

For our April program, Nick Gessler will give a talk on the Cuban Numbers Stations.  The talk will include a short introduction to cryptology, its history from cipher disks to one-time-pads and the enigmatic "numbers stations."  Nick will bring some examples of cryptographs from his own collection, dating from the late 1600s to the present and then will move the spotlight to the strange transmissions picked up internationally and cataloged by hundreds of listeners.  These are the "numbers stations," used by clandestine organizations throughout the world, lists of "random" numbers and "random" sounds which encode instructions from espionage handlers to their agents in foreign lands.  Nick will finally focus on Cuban spies and Cuban "numbers stations" which you can hear most every evening on your shortwave receivers.

Nick Gessler received his Ph.D. in computational Anthropology from UCLA developing “Artificial Culture,” simulating interacting individuals in societies.  He continues this research, focusing on the role of networks of trust, secrecy and deception in human cultural evolution at Duke University in the Information Science & Information Studies Program.  Bridging these interests, he offers one course in theory building:  “Espionage, Cryptology and Psychological Operations” and one in multiagent modeling:  “Artificial Life, Artificial Culture and Evolutionary Computation.”  During breaks, he hunts and collects meteorites.

Bill Richards, a former DFMA member, died Sunday night 18 March 2012.  Bill is survived by Teresa Richards his wife of 30 years and his two children Robert Theodore Richards (aged 23) and Natalie Ann Richards (aged 20) all of Durham County.  Bill was the brother-in-law of Dave Love, N4UBH and Paul Van Doren, KE4OXN.  The cause of death was a sudden heart attack that occurred at home.

Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran who served during the Vietnam Era as an electronic warfare/intelligence  specialist.  Later in life, Bill became an amateur radio operator and eventually advanced to the extra class operator license.  Bill's interests in amateur radio included lighthouses and lightships on the air and IOTA.

Bill's professional pursuits and life long passion were photography and graphics.  In recent years Bill had been employed by UNC as a digital archivist.

Bill's final wishes were that he be cremated and his ashes scattered near his beach house on Top Sail Island.  Bill had suffered from diabetes mellitus and the family has asked that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.

Help out at the Creekside Elementary School Science Fair.

The DFMA has committed to support the Science Fair at Creekside Elementary School, again this year, on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. The goal is to have six to eight hams present to demonstrate and inform students and their parents about radio communications and ham radio.  If you have any piece of equipment suitable for demonstration or display, at an elementary school, bring it along.  The DFMA’s MCU will be there and there will be tables available.  The building will be available for display set up at 1800, the Fair opens at 1830 and runs to 2000. Please contact Rhett, KE4HIH, if you can help out. Catch him on the Possum Trot Net, or, more privately, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 919-732-8492 at home.

Some of you signed up at the last DFMA meeting.  Thank you!  We can always use more help.  And even if you didn't sign up but, at the last minute, find that you can help, feel free to come.  Look for the MCU.

The school is at 5321 Ephesus Church Rd, Durham, NC
